British Values

Alexandra Junior School is a diverse and multicultural school set within Stoke on Trent and as a school we are proud to promote British Values.

The DfE recently published a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

At Alexandra Junior these values are reinforced regularly

Alexandra Junior is a UNICEF Rights Respecting school. Each year the children decide upon their class charter and the rights associated with these. All of the children contribute to the writing of the charter. Children have many opportunities for their voices to be heard. We have a school council, consisting of a representative from each of our 8 classes, which meets regularly to discuss issues raised in class council meetings. These children are voted for and elected by their class. Pupils have questionnaires in which they can grade different aspects of the school.

The Rule of Law

Children are aware that different situations within life have set rules, whether these are class rules, school rules or the law of our country. Children are involved in writing their class rules and through clear praise and consequences our school rules are reinforced consistently throughout daily routines. Children are taught the importance of laws to protect us. Our close relationship with the local police PCSO and fire services also promote positive relationships to our children.

Individual Liberty

Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and advised how to exercise these safely, for example through our E-Safety and PSHE lessons. Pupils also have the opportunity to attend one of our many after school clubs.

Mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

At Alexandra Junior School our children learn constantly that mutual respect is key to successful, positive relationships. Our diverse school joins in festivals and celebrations from a range of faiths. Pupils have themed days and parents and local religious leaders share in our events.

Alexandra Junior School, all staff actively promote these fundamental British Values and as a school we challenge extremist views. All staff are regularly trained and kept up to date with issues which pose a threat to our children.
